Anime That's Free on YouTube But Blocked in the US

Somebody tells you One-Punch Man is free on YouTube. They are not wrong, they are not describing a pirate upload, and they may well be watching it as they type. You open the link and get a grey box that says the video is unavailable.

Nothing has gone wrong. The upload is real, official, free, and licensed for a part of the world that does not include yours.

This is the least understood thing about legal free anime, and it produces a specific kind of frustration, because every signal says the show is available. There is a channel with the publisher's name on it. There is a full episode list. There are comments from people who watched it this morning. The only thing missing is the permission that would let it play for you.

Why a free video has a border

Streaming rights are sold by territory, one region at a time, and they are sold to different buyers. A distributor who acquires a series for South and Southeast Asia can do what it likes inside that footprint, and what several of them have decided to do is give the show away on YouTube and sell advertising against it. Meanwhile a different company holds the same series for North America and has built a subscription business on it.

Both deals are legitimate. They cover different maps. YouTube enforces the maps with a country list attached to the upload, so one video is free in Manila, free in Jakarta, free in Mumbai, and dark in Chicago. Same file, same channel, same day.

The channel names worth recognising are Muse Asia, which is by a wide margin the largest of these and carries a genuinely startling catalogue, and Ani-One, which operates several regional variants including an Indian one. Both are real rights holders doing a legal thing. Neither is licensed for the United States.

What that costs a US viewer

The list below is the honest accounting: series in our index whose entire free run is outside the US licence. Not partly. Entirely. Every free episode that exists for these shows is one a US reader cannot open.

It is a heavy list, and that is the point. This is not an obscure tail. It is topped by some of the most followed anime in the index, the ones people search for by name with the word free attached, and the answer they get from most of the internet is a pirate mirror because the honest answer is uncomfortable.

We checked, rather than assuming. Eight of the most prominent entries were fetched from a US address to confirm that the block is real and not an artefact of our own data. All eight came back unplayable. The country list we hold and the wall you would hit are the same wall.

On the obvious workaround

There is one, everybody knows what it is, and this page is not going to walk you through it.

Not out of primness. Out of self-interest, and yours. The licence is the reason these uploads exist at all. A distributor that gives away a show inside its territory is making a bet that the giveaway builds an audience it can sell to. When the traffic on those uploads stops matching the territory, the bet stops making sense, and the response is not a sternly worded notice. It is the free episodes quietly coming down. That has happened before, to catalogues that were much loved while they lasted.

What is actually free where you are

Because the good news is real too, and it gets buried under this. The most followed titles with a free official English episode that plays in the United States are below, queried live, and behind them sits a much longer shelf of complete runs, full seasons and back catalogue that the region conversation never gets around to mentioning.

It is a different shape of catalogue than the blocked one. The blocked shelf is heavy on recent hits, because that is what the Asian distributors are buying. The US free shelf is heavier on complete older runs, publisher back catalogue and shows whose rights have relaxed with age, which means it rewards a different kind of browsing. You are less likely to find this season's most talked about series and much more likely to find a finished show you can watch end to end tonight without paying anyone.

How this page stays honest

Every number and every row here is a query against the index, run when you load the page. Nothing is a typed list, because a typed list of what is free is wrong within weeks and wrong silently.

Rights move. A series that is blocked today can open up when a licence lapses or a new distributor takes a wider footprint, and when that happens it leaves this list on its own and appears on the free one on its own. That is the intended behaviour.
