Fantasy is the genre anime was arguably built to do best. Freed from the budget of live-action creatures and the reach of a physical camera, it can render an entire cosmology, a magic system with real rules, a continent with its own history, a monster no film could ever afford, and make you believe every inch of it. But the fantasy anime that actually last aren't the ones with the biggest spectacle. They're the ones that give you a reason to care: a power system that doubles as a moral test, a quest that turns out to be about the people walking it, a world whose rules cost the characters something real. Here are the ones that get it right, and then the fantasy series you can start streaming free on AnimeSphere this minute.
The all-time greats
These are the pillars of the genre, the shows and films fans reach for when someone asks where to start. Not everything here is free everywhere, but each one is worth hunting down, and it's the standard every new fantasy anime is measured against.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)
Two brothers break alchemy's one great taboo trying to bring their mother back, and pay for it with Edward's limbs and Alphonse's entire body. Its "equivalent exchange" magic system, airtight plotting, and a story that pays off every single thread make it the show most fans hand a newcomer first.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (2023)
The Demon King is already dead when this one begins. It follows the elf mage who outlived the human companions she adventured with, and only now, decades too late, realizes she never really got to know them. A quiet, aching meditation on time and memory that became one of the most acclaimed anime of the decade.
Hunter x Hunter (2011)
Gon leaves his island to find the father who abandoned him and stumbles into a world of assassins, auction wars, and the endlessly inventive Nen power system. It only gets darker and smarter the longer it runs, peaking in the merciless Chimera Ant arc that pushes its heroes past any easy victory.
Made in Abyss
A young girl and her robot companion descend into a bottomless, monster-filled pit where every attempt to climb back out inflicts an escalating physical curse. Its storybook art and adorable heroes hide some of the most harrowing turns anywhere in the medium, beautiful and genuinely brutal in equal measure.
Mushishi
A wandering expert studies "mushi," primordial life-forms that drift somewhere between the living world and the supernatural, across self-contained folktales of quiet wonder. There is almost no action in it, and it's mesmerizing anyway, the most meditative fantasy anime ever made.
Berserk (1997)
Guts, a lone mercenary hauling an impossibly large sword, carves through a brutal medieval world in the series that set the template for dark fantasy in anime. Its story of ambition, loyalty, and betrayal still casts a long shadow over everything grimdark that came after it.
Princess Mononoke
Hayao Miyazaki's epic pits a forest of ancient animal gods against a mining town carving into their mountain, and pointedly refuses to make either side the villain. It's fantasy filmmaking at its most ambitious, hand-drawn on a scale almost no one attempts anymore.
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World
Subaru is yanked into a fantasy world with one cruel gift: every time he dies, he wakes up at an earlier point and has to live the horror over again, unable to tell a soul why. It takes the well-worn isekai premise and weaponizes it into something genuinely psychological.
Delicious in Dungeon
A party that just lost a member to a dragon dives back into the dungeon flat broke, and decides to eat the monsters they kill to survive. Studio Trigger turns a joke premise into one of the most thoughtfully built fantasy worlds in years, complete with its own ecology and cooking.
Ranking of Kings
Bojji, a tiny deaf prince written off by his entire kingdom, sets out to become the greatest king in the world with only a mischievous shadow creature for a friend. It looks like a gentle children's fable and hits like a freight train. One of the most quietly devastating fantasy stories of recent years.
