Discotek adds more 2000s anime to Deep Dives. Our free shelf for that decade is 26 entries

MediaOCD has added more titles to its Discotek Deep Dives project. Among the additions named in the announcement are Kashimashi, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Kyo Kara Maoh!, alongside others our cached summary does not list in full.

In our index all three of those titles are 2000s television, so the question here is what that decade looks like on a free and legal streaming shelf.

What the 2000s look like here

Our index records 1,018 television entries whose season year falls between 2000 and 2009. Every one of those pages was fetched from animesphere.app today, and all 1,018 loaded. Of them, 26 state a free episode count. Those 26 state 772 episodes between them, and only 3 of the 26 state exactly one episode, so this is not a shelf made mostly of single-episode entries.

Nine of the 26 carry the name of a video game, card game or toy franchise: one Pokémon entry, three Yu-Gi-Oh! entries, two Sonic X entries, two Beyblade entries, and Transformers: Armada. Those nine account for 402 of the 772 episodes. The largest single entry is Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, whose page states 182 episodes.

The 2006 Kashimashi series, which our index files under the title Girl Meets Girl, and the 2004 pair Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Kyo Kara Maoh! all loaded today. None of the three states a free episode count.

What sits behind the second largest number

The second largest number in this census belongs to Atashin'chi, a 2002 series our index holds with 330 episodes recorded and a 25-minute episode length. The live page states that 174 episodes are free.

Behind that 174 sit 198 uploads, and all 198 were opened today: 198 resolved, none failed, 198 distinct video identities with 198 distinct titles, so nothing is double-counted. Every one sits on the show's own channel, which carries a YouTube verified badge. Every upload title carries an ENG sub label, and every watch page reports an authored English subtitle track alongside an automatic Japanese caption track. Japanese audio, real English subtitles, not a dub. All 198 were playable, with no region gate.

The uploads number themselves from 1 to 660 while our index files them under episode numbers running 1 to 330. Exactly one upload's number matches the episode slot we store it under, and 24 of our slots hold two different uploads. The runtimes range from 353 to 571 seconds, averaging 455, against that recorded 25-minute length. So 174 is what our page shows. It does not line up with the 330 episode slots our index records.

Something short

Romeo x Juliet, a 2007 series with 24 episodes recorded, states 3 free episodes. All three were opened today and all three resolved: three distinct videos, none filed twice, numbering themselves 1, 2 and 3 to match the slots our index stores them under. Each runs 1,453 seconds against a recorded 24-minute length. The first is on the Crunchyroll channel and the other two on a channel named Crunchyroll Dubs, both verified. The first episode's page reports an authored English subtitle track alongside an automatic Japanese caption track. The country allow-list on all three includes the United States. It stops at 3 of 24, so it is a sample, not a run.
