Hasbro Puts Its Own Cartoon Archive on a 24-Hour Channel

The vault becomes the schedule

Hasbro has launched a linear channel called Hasbro Legends. It runs on a round-the-clock loop and reaches viewers two ways, over the air, and through streaming platforms. The lineup draws on three long-running brands from the company's shelf: the Duel Masters card-game series, Power Rangers, and Transformers. Anime News Network has the launch report.

Programming a channel out of your own vault is a low-effort answer to a question every toy company with a decades-deep archive eventually faces: what do you do with hundreds of episodes that no longer move product and that no outside streamer is queuing up to license? Running them yourself costs very little and keeps the brand in front of the people who grew up with it. Hasbro already reached that conclusion about YouTube, which is the only reason a 1984 cartoon sits in our index at all.

Why a robot toy commercial from 1984 counts as anime

Transformers Generation 1 was a US-Japan co-production. Toei animated much of it, while the writing and voice recording were handled stateside, which is why the English audio is the original broadcast version rather than a dub, and why the series has a real place in an anime catalogue rather than an honorary one.

What is actually free here, and what is not

The rest of the Transformers shelf here has catalogue entries with nothing free behind them: Cybertron, Energon, Robots in Disguise, Headmasters, Victory, Super-God Masterforce, Zone, and the 1986 animated film.

That is the honest shape of it. Legal free viewing of 1980s toy-line animation keeps getting a little easier, mostly because rights holders have worked out that a dormant archive is worth more as advertising than as a locked vault.
