There's a feeling this show captures better than almost anything I've reviewed: the moment you realize your life has been idling, and the terrifying, exhilarating decision to do one enormous thing about it. A Place Further Than the Universe opens on exactly that ache and never lets go of it. Four girls, each stuck in her own way, talk themselves into an expedition to Antarctica — and this 2018 series, just thirteen episodes, treats that absurd goal with total sincerity.

What makes it soar is that every character earns her seat on the trip. These aren't archetypes assembled for balance; they're four distinct kinds of stuck — the girl who never starts things, the girl running from something, the girl who has everything but connection, and the girl carrying a loss too big to name. The friendships form messily, with real friction and real repair, and by the time the journey properly begins, the show has banked so much honest character work that even small victories hit like finales. The emotional payoffs here are among the best-constructed in the medium, precisely because they're paid for in advance.

My one reservation is the on-ramp: the opening episode leans harder on comedic energy than the material that follows, and some viewers may misread the show's register before it deepens. Push past it.
