Free! -Iwatobi Swim Club- Review — Water Animation That Still Laps the Field
The 2013 swim-club series is really a friendship drama wearing a sports anime's jersey — and it swims better that way.

Gorgeous races and a likable team carry a sports show that's lighter on competition than its rivals.

Let's be direct about what Free! is: a sports anime where the sport is the second-most important thing on screen. The 2013 series follows Haruka, a swimmer who loves water the way other protagonists love winning, as old teammates reunite to resurrect their school's defunct swim club — and a former friend turned rival gives the reunion its edge.
When this show does race, it races beautifully. The water animation is the star athlete here: every dive, turn, and stroke reads cleanly, with a sense of weight and drag that most sports series never attempt. The freestyle sequences have real momentum, and the show understands the fundamental readability rule of sports anime — you always know where everyone is in the pool and what the gap means. Twelve episodes is a tight cour, and the pacing rarely wastes one.
The honest knock: if you come to sports anime for competitive escalation — tournament ladders, tactical matchups, the grind — Free! will feel thin. It's a drama about friendship, old wounds, and what the water means to five very different guys, with races as punctuation rather than plot. Judged on those terms, it's a warm, confident show whose comedy lands and whose emotional beats hit harder than expected. Just know which event you're signing up for.
