Yuri!!! on ICE Review — A Comeback Story That Skates on Feeling

Here's my thesis: the best sports anime aren't really about the sport, and Yuri!!! on ICE proves it in twelve episodes. Figure skating is simply the most honest arena this story could have chosen, because it's a discipline where you perform your inner life in public, scored by judges, watched by everyone who's ever doubted you. Yuri Katsuki begins the series having failed on the biggest stage, ready to quit — and the show treats that shame with unusual tenderness rather than as a training-montage speed bump.

What elevates it is the relationship at its center. When champion Viktor Nikiforov crashes into Yuri's life as his coach, the series becomes a study in what it means to be truly seen by another person — and the growing bond between them is written with a sincerity that still feels rare. Add the abrasive young rival Yuri Plisetsky and you have a triangle of ambition, insecurity, and affection that pays off in small, human moments as often as in competition results.

My one honest complaint: the skating animation is inconsistent, with routines that get visibly recycled and off-model stretches in later episodes that undercut climactic performances.
