Shigeru Mizuki's White Flag Becomes an Anime Special. What War Anime Is Free Here?
The manga airs as an anime special on Sunday, inside an NHK Special documentary. Our own war shelf answers a narrower question, and one complete run inside it plays free in the United States and Canada.

Shigeru Mizuki's manga White Flag is getting an anime special, and it airs on Sunday as part of an NHK Special documentary, as reported by Anime News Network. The source describes White Flag as a WW2 manga. What our own catalogue can answer precisely is a narrower question: how much war anime our pages state as free.
What carries his name here
Our index holds 20,497 anime entries. Exactly one carries Shigeru Mizuki's name in its title: a 2010 film we record as Mizuki Shigeru no Toono Monogatari. We fetched its live page on animesphere.app today. It states no free episode, and in our database the entry carries no source rows of any kind.
The war shelf, counted today
Our index stores a set of descriptive tags per entry, each with a voted rank from 0 to 100. 648 entries carry the tag War at a rank of 60 or higher. We fetched all 648 of those pages from animesphere.app today rather than reading the result out of our own copy of the data: 648 of 648 returned HTTP 200, with no failures. Of those, 28 state a free episode, and those 28 pages state 233 episodes between them. The largest figure any single entry in the group states is 49 episodes. Two entries state it, and one of the two is Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.
One note on method, since it changes the number. Our local database, measured separately, finds 23 of the 648 rather than 28. We are publishing the production figure, because production is the site a reader visits.
One complete run inside it
Our index records Sound of the Sky as a 2010 television series of 12 episodes at a 24-minute episode length, tagged War at rank 64, and filed under the genres Music, Sci-Fi and Slice of Life. All 12 episodes are free here, which is the complete run our index records, and the live page fetched today states 12 episodes. The channel is Nozomi Entertainment, which does not carry a YouTube verified badge.
We resolved all 12 videos today:
- 12 of 12 resolved, with no fetch failures, across 12 distinct upload identities.
- No video is filed against two episode numbers, and none is also filed under another series.
- The episode number in each upload's own title matches the number we store, on all 12.
- Runtimes range from 1,465 to 1,570 seconds against that recorded 24-minute length, so these are whole episodes rather than clips or trailers.
The watch pages report playable status, with no purchase or rental markers. The country allow-list on these rows is Canada and the United States.
There is no caption track on these pages in any language, so there is no subtitle file for a viewer to switch on. We pulled frame images from roughly a quarter, a half and three quarters of the way through episodes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12, and looked at nine of them. Four show an English subtitle line burned into the picture itself, drawn from episodes 1, 7 and 12. The English subtitles here are part of the video image.
