Spice & Wolf remake gets a 2027 second season, and neither version is free here

Anime News Network reports that the 2024 remake of Spice & Wolf has a second season, and that season now has a year attached to it: 2027. A teaser visual went out with it, the second for that season. The remake's first season aired in 2024.

That is a good excuse to ask something our listings can answer and the announcement cannot. When our index links two television versions of a series years apart, does either end up watchable for free here?

The answer, for 226 entries, is mostly no

Our index records relationships between entries, and one type marks an entry as an alternative version of another. Take every television entry linked that way to another television entry, where the two first aired at least eight years apart, and you get 226 entries forming 231 pairs. The relationship is broader than the word remake: it also catches spin-offs and side stories.

Of those 226, viewed from the United States, 15 state a free episode count on the live site, adding up to 252 episodes. 203 hold no episode source row of any kind. The remaining 8 hold rows and still state nothing. Looked at as pairs, 13 of the 231 have at least one half with a count, and only 2 have both.

Spice & Wolf sits in the empty part. We hold the 2008 series, its 2009 second season, a 2009 original video animation, the 2024 remake, and a separate entry for the newly announced season. None of the five states a free episode count. The 2008 and 2024 entries are linked as alternative versions, sixteen years apart, so the pair is inside the 226. Our index has no air date recorded for the announced season.

What our own shelf holds

Magic Knight Rayearth (1994) is one of the 15. Its listing states 20 free episodes, matching the 20 we record, all from Anime! on TMS Official Channel, which carries a YouTube verified badge. All 20 were checked today and played. Each runs between 1,475 and 1,478 seconds against a recorded 24 minute length, every title ends with "English Dub", and the country list includes the United States. Its pair partner, Magic Knight Rayearth (2026), states no count.

True Cooking Master Boy (2019) states 12, our full recorded run, from It's Anime powered by REMOW. All 12 played when checked today. Each carries an authored English subtitle track over Japanese audio, so this is subtitled, not dubbed. Cooking Master Boy (1997) states no count. Trigun (1998) states a single episode, on the verified Crunchyroll channel, an upload titled "Trigun Episode 1 English Dub" and carrying no country restriction.

A problem in our own listing

High School! Kimengumi (1985) is half of one of the two pairs where both sides state a count, and its stated count no longer matches what plays. All 31 rows we hold come from a single channel. Checked today, 30 of the 31 no longer play for a signed-out viewer, reporting that a sign-in is required. Only episode 11 still plays. The page still says 17. The 2026 entry's one upload is titled as episodes 1 to 3 and runs 4,136 seconds against a 23 minute episode length: three episodes in one video. We are not claiming that is fixed.
