The Ribbon Hero is a new film adapting Ribbon no Kishi, the Osamu Tezuka work known in English as Princess Knight. It premieres on Netflix worldwide on August 8. Its trailer has now revealed five cast members and previewed an English dub, and NIJISANJI VTubers Mito Tsukino, Lunlun and Debidebi Debiru have joined the cast, as reported by Anime News Network.
A film is a useful object to compare against, because it is complete by definition. One date, everywhere at once. That is not the usual shape here, and the source material makes the point better than any general argument would.
What we actually hold of Princess Knight
The 1967 television series the film draws on is in our index at 52 episodes. Exactly one of them is free and playable in the United States.
That one is episode 1, uploaded to Tezuka Productions' own channel, "Tezuka Productions Offical" (@tezukaproductions-en). It runs 1,535 seconds, its region field is unrestricted, and the upload title reads "[OFFICIAL]PRINCESS KNIGHT 01 (ENGLISH SUB)".
The English is real, but it is not a caption track. The upload exposes no caption track at all. We confirmed the language a different way: still frames sampled from roughly a quarter and three quarters of the way through show English subtitles burned into the picture. A viewer cannot switch them off. Those same frames also show a "SAMPLE" watermark in the upper-left corner, present throughout.
So the honest answer for a reader who watches the film and wants the series is: one episode out of 52, with a watermark on it.
One out of 52 is not unusual here
Across the whole index, 779 series and 7,648 episodes are free and playable from the United States. Of the free series carrying a recorded episode total greater than one, 536 qualify for the comparison. Of those:
- 111 are complete, meaning every listed episode is free.
- 425 are partial.
Partial is the normal state here.
Two runs you can finish
If the appeal of a film is that it ends, these two carry the same shape.
- Sherlock Hound: 26 of 26 episodes free, the complete run, on Anime! on TMS Official Channel. Upload titles end "| English Dub | Full Episode", and the country allow-list includes the United States. All 26 video IDs were re-checked today with no fetch failures, no numbering mismatches and no duplicate episode identities.
- Speed Racer, listed under its original title Mach GoGoGo (1967): 52 of 52 episodes free, the complete run, on TokuSHOUTsu (@TokuSHOUTsu), a channel carrying YouTube's verified badge. The region field is unrestricted. Japanese audio with an authored English subtitle track, confirmed on episodes 1, 27 and 52; episodes run about 1,544 to 1,564 seconds. All 52 video IDs were re-checked today with the same clean result.
They are simply runs you can start and finish.
