Free Anime You Have to Watch on YouTube Itself

There is a shelf of free, legal, complete anime that almost nothing on the internet will tell you about, and the reason is boring and structural rather than interesting.

Search for where to watch an older series free and you will be handed the same three answers. A streaming aggregator that lists subscription services. A page recommending a free trial, which is not the same thing as free. Or a pirate mirror. What none of them mention is that for a certain class of show, the company that owns it has already put the whole thing on YouTube, in public, for nothing.

Why nobody indexes this shelf

The publisher in question here is Nozomi Entertainment, the anime label that grew out of Right Stuf. Its channel is not a trailer reel or a clip farm. It is a library, and a lot of it is complete series with the episodes in order.

So why does this not show up everywhere? Because of a single technical decision that has nothing to do with copyright and everything to do with plumbing.

YouTube lets an uploader decide, per video, whether other websites may embed it. Most sites that write about free anime are aggregating what they can play or what a database tells them exists. A show that is free to watch but impossible to embed falls straight through that gap. It is not in the streaming databases, because it is not a streaming service. It is not on the sites that index playable video, because it will not play there. It is simply sitting on a channel, complete, waiting.

What we found when we counted it

We swept the label's channel through YouTube's own data interface and read every playlist item by item: how long it runs, whether it is public, whether it will play for someone in the United States, and whether anyone else is allowed to embed it.

The result splits the library almost perfectly in two, and the line is embedding.

A handful of series are marked embeddable across the board. Those are the ones AnimeSphere already plays, and you can press play on them in the page. For everything else the answer is no, and it is no on essentially every video in the playlist rather than on some awkward majority of them.

There are exactly two exceptions in the whole library, and both are the kind that proves the rule. One series has a single embeddable episode out of a complete two-season run. Another has two. Nothing else in the unembeddable half has any at all.

That pattern is worth pausing on, because it tells you this is a deliberate rights decision rather than an accident or an oversight. Somebody at the label went show by show and decided which ones a third party may host. Our own catalog holds exactly the shows on the yes side of that line, which means nothing was ever missed. There was simply a fence there that we had not looked at directly.

The correction this forced on our own notes

Our internal record of this channel, written in July, said that one of these series was a single-episode sampler and not worth ingesting.

That was wrong, and wrong in an instructive way. The show is a complete two-season run, every episode public and playable. Exactly one of those episodes is embeddable. From inside a tool that only records what it can play, a complete series with one embeddable episode and a genuine one-episode sampler look identical.

The verdict happened to stay correct, because we still cannot play it. The reasoning was not, and the difference matters: a sampler is nothing, while a complete run that we cannot embed is a real recommendation we owe our readers. That is what this page is.

What is actually on offer

The shows below are not obscure. There is one of the most written-about television anime of the nineties, complete, in both a subtitled and a dubbed version. There is a long-running comedy that ran past fifty episodes. There are cult science fiction series, a sports drama, a pair of quiet romances, and the two later seasons of a healing series whose first season does play on AnimeSphere.

Every one of them is free. Every one of them is official. And for almost all of them, the only place they will play is the publisher's own channel, which is exactly where the links below go.

The catch worth stating

Free on YouTube is not the same as permanent. A publisher can make a playlist private tomorrow, and a few of this label's series are already blocked in the United States even though they are public elsewhere. Those were left off this page rather than listed with an asterisk.

The list is rebuilt from what is live rather than copied from an old audit, so if a run disappears it stops appearing here too. That is the only honest way to publish a page like this, and it is the reason this page can say what the aggregators cannot.
