How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord Review, A Power Fantasy That Knows Exactly What It Is

My thesis on this 2018 isekai: it survives on one smart design choice. Its hero, transported into a fantasy world with his max-level game character's body and power, is crippled by social anxiety, so he masks it by roleplaying the arrogant Demon Lord persona his stats suggest. Every boast is a bluff by a man internally panicking. That gap between the overwhelming exterior and the terrified interior is the show's actual engine, and it's a better engine than most of its genre cohort runs on.

As worldbuilding, it's serviceable rather than rigorous. The game-logic framework, levels, magic reflection, summoning contracts, is applied consistently enough that the power system's stakes stay legible, and the early plot hook of two summoners accidentally binding themselves to the man they meant to enslave sets up a workable found-party dynamic. Nothing here will surprise a veteran of the genre, but nothing insults your intelligence either; the twelve episodes move briskly and know their destination.

The honest caveat is unavoidable: the ecchi content is constant, loud, and load-bearing. This is a fanservice show first, and viewers who don't want that will find no version of this series that works for them, the comedy, the character beats, even the power demonstrations are routinely routed through it.
