In/Spectre Review — The Mystery Show Where the Lie Is the Solution

In/Spectre's central idea is genuinely rare: this is a mystery series where the truth is often known early, and the real battle is constructing a lie plausible enough to beat it. Kotoko Iwanaga, a self-appointed "goddess of wisdom" who mediates disputes for spirits, doesn't deduce — she fabricates, layering competing explanations until the convenient one wins. In a supernatural setting where collective belief has real force, rhetoric becomes a weapon system, and the show is rigorous about how that system works.

That rigor is the appeal for viewers who like their supernatural worlds to have rules. The yokai here operate on obligation, precedent, and negotiated settlements rather than raw power, and Kotoko's partnership with Kurou — a man the spirit world is frankly afraid of — inverts the usual protector dynamic in ways the romance-comedy side mines well. Their bickering is the connective tissue, and it's consistently sharper than the premise strictly requires.

The caveat is structural and significant: this 2020 series commits most of its 12 episodes to a single case, and the format means characters standing still and talking through hypotheticals for entire episodes at a stretch. If you need visual momentum, the back half will test you badly — the climax is a forum argument, almost literally. But if you find escalating verbal warfare inherently exciting, In/Spectre offers a puzzle-box structure almost nothing else in the genre attempts. Only the first episode streams free here, and it is honestly a fair sample: how you feel about its talk-to-action ratio is how you'll feel about all twelve.
