Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Review — A Ghost Story in Storybook Ink

A girl kneels in an old school bathroom, whispering a wish to a ghost story — and the ghost story answers. That cold open sets the contract for Toilet-bound Hanako-kun: Nene wants romance, Hanako-kun wants an assistant, and the price of a granted wish turns out to be a bond neither of them fully understands. From its first minutes, the 2020 series announces itself as one of the most visually distinctive shows of its year, all flat storybook panels, heavy outlines, and colors that look screen-printed onto the frame.

Beneath the aesthetic is a supernatural system with genuine spine. The school's Seven Mysteries operate on rumor-logic — what students believe about an apparition literally shapes what it is and what it can do — which turns gossip into a weapon and makes every investigation double as worldbuilding. The show slides between broad comedy, melancholy, and sudden menace with impressive control, and Hanako himself is the reason it works: a prankster spirit whose cheer is very obviously a sealed door, opened only in glimpses.

The caveat is completeness. Twelve episodes establish the mysteries, the factions, and several aching questions, then stop well short of resolving the threads they've so carefully laid — this is an introduction, not a full arc, and it doesn't pretend otherwise.
