More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers. Review — Fake Marriage, Real Ache

There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over two people sharing an apartment who aren't supposed to want to be there — and this show lives inside that quiet. More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers. hangs its 2022 season on a shamelessly artificial hook: a school program that assigns students to live as practice married couples, grading their domestic performance. Jirou is paired with Akari, the glamorous classmate he assumes has nothing in common with him, while the people they each actually pine for are paired off elsewhere. Contrived? Completely. But contrivance is just scaffolding, and what gets built on it is surprisingly tender.

The show understands that fake intimacy generates real feelings in the gaps — the accidental domestic rhythms, the performances for evaluators that stop feeling like performances. Akari in particular gets more interiority than her archetype usually allows, and watching her guard drop by millimeters is the season's real payoff. When the emotional beats land, they land because the show has done the slow, patient work of making cohabitation itself the love language.

Be warned on one front: the ecchi fan-service is frequent and sometimes actively undercuts the sincerity, deflating scenes that were three seconds from meaning something. It's the show's worst habit and it never fully breaks it. Still, with all 12 episodes streaming free here, this is an easy recommendation for romance viewers who like their will-they-won't-they served with genuine yearning underneath the genre packaging.
