Recovery of an MMO Junkie Review — logging off, falling in

Who is this for? Anyone who has ever been more themselves behind an avatar than at a dinner party — and anyone who suspects 2017 anime about internet life must be hopelessly dated. Recovery of an MMO Junkie is the counterexample. Rewatched on a modern binge, this 10-episode romcom about a woman in her thirties who quits corporate life, retreats into an online game, and unknowingly starts falling for someone she already knows offline plays like it was written for the current moment, not against it.

What distinguishes it from its era's other net-romance stories is generosity. Where contemporaries treated heavy gaming as a character flaw to be cured by love, this one treats the guild as a real community and the avatar as a real facet of self — the fantasy-game interior isn't an escape to be escaped, it's the space where the leads can practice honesty before attempting it face to face. That was quietly radical in 2017, and it's the reason the show holds up: the romance is built on two adults who like each other in both worlds.

The caveat is the obvious one — at ten episodes the series is simply too short, wrapping just as its central identity comedy of errors reaches full bloom, and the ending has to sprint.
