Overlord IV Review — Conquest as Spreadsheet, and Why That Works

The thesis of Overlord IV is simple: the most dangerous thing in this world is no longer a monster, it's an administration. This 2022 season, thirteen episodes, is less about whether the Sorcerer Kingdom can win fights — that question was settled long ago — and more about how an overwhelming power integrates itself into a continent of smaller states that can neither resist nor trust it. Watching neighboring powers negotiate with something they cannot beat is the season's real spectacle, and the show commits to it with unusual discipline.

That discipline is the appeal for worldbuilding sticklers. Trade terms, tribute, the optics of mercy — the season keeps asking what victory costs the loser and what it buys the winner, and its best episodes are effectively diplomatic thrillers wearing fantasy armor. The gap between how subordinates interpret orders and what was actually intended remains the series' most reliable engine, equal parts comedy and dread.

The catch The honest weakness is pacing: whole stretches are conversations about logistics, and viewers who came for dark-fantasy action will find the ratio of council chambers to battlefields skewed hard toward the chambers. It's also a terrible entry point — only one episode streams free here, and frankly one episode of season four would bewilder a newcomer anyway. But for those already invested, this is the franchise maturing into what it always threatened to become: a story about empire, told from the throne.
