That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Review — Empire-Building at a Walking Pace
A reincarnated slime skips the revenge arc and founds a nation instead, in 2018's most agreeable isekai.

The rare power fantasy that spends its power on infrastructure — comforting, clever, and light on real danger.

The strangest thing about this show is how relaxing it is. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime opens on the genre's stock death-and-rebirth beat, then immediately swerves: instead of grinding for revenge or glory, its protagonist — reborn as a blob with an appetite for absorbing abilities — starts solving other people's problems. A pack of goblins needs protection. Monsters need a town. Neighbors need treaties. The 2018 series, 24 episodes of TV, is less a battle shonen than a municipal project with fight scenes.
From a pacing standpoint, that's a bold trade. The show's momentum comes not from tournament ladders but from accumulation — each episode adds a species, a craft, an alliance, and you can feel the settlement compounding like interest. When fights do arrive they're brisk and readable, staged to establish new relationships rather than to bruise. Rimuru's skill-absorption gimmick keeps the action inventive, and the ensemble of monster lieutenants gives the comedy a deep bench.
The honest caveat follows directly from the premise: the protagonist is so capable, and the world so eager to be won over, that genuine tension is scarce — problems tend to dissolve on contact rather than get solved under pressure. If you need stakes, this will feel like a warm bath. But as comfort-food worldbuilding executed with real craft, it's top of class.
