Watch Gundam Free: 114 Official Episodes, No Account

Gundam has a reputation for being impossible to start. Forty-five years, a dozen separate continuities, and a fandom whose friendly advice usually opens with a timeline chart. The standard recommendation is to pick one entry point and commit. The standard obstacle is that the entry point everyone names sits behind a subscription you have not decided to pay for yet.

Here is the part that does not make it into the recommendation threads: Bandai Namco gives a great deal of it away. Not clips. Not trailers. Not a teaser cut to sell you the rest. Whole runs, first episode to last, on a channel the company operates itself, with subtitle tracks the company uploaded itself.

I spent this week opening every one of those uploads to find out how much of that is actually true from a United States living room, because the free Gundam question turns out to have three different ways of going wrong and most pages that answer it check none of them.

What is really on the shelf

The headline is Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, complete. All 49 episodes, in order, in HD remaster, each one carrying a real uploaded English subtitle track rather than a machine transcription. For an entire generation of English-speaking viewers this was Gundam, and it remains the least demanding way in: no prior series, no timeline homework, a self-contained war story about five teenagers who were handed weapons far too powerful for anyone their age. Its sequel film, Endless Waltz, is here too, all three parts.

The modern answer is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, and both of its seasons are complete. This one is English-dubbed, stated as such by the publisher in its own upload titles. Twenty-four episodes across the two halves, plus the PROLOGUE short. It is the most self-contained Gundam in decades and the one I would put in front of somebody who has never watched a mecha show in their life. Worth knowing before you click: the channel numbers season two continuously with season one, so what our player calls episode one is the twenty-fourth chapter of a single story. Watch them in order and it reads perfectly.

After War Gundam X sits in the middle at 30 of its 39 episodes. It is the strangest of the 1990s run and the one most worth the gamble if Wing lands for you.

Everything else is the sampler shelf, and it is a good one. The 1979 original that invented the genre, first episode, subtitled. Mobile Fighter G Gundam, the one where the mecha have national gimmicks and it absolutely works. Gundam 00. Unicorn RE:0096. Build Divers. And two SD Gundam spinoffs, which are sillier than they have any right to be.

How these were checked, and why that matters

A free-anime list is only worth the verification behind it, and the verification is where nearly all of them stop. Every entry above was opened this week and read on three separate axes.

First, language. Not the language field in a database, which is a guess made by a harvester and is wrong often enough to be dangerous, but the publisher's own upload title and the video's caption manifest. A real uploaded English subtitle file is a different thing from an automatic machine transcription, and only the first supports the sentence "you can watch this in English." Every classic entry above carries the real one.

Second, the episode number. The upload usually states which episode it is, so our episode twelve can be checked against the video's own claim of being episode twelve. This sounds pedantic until it fails. It failed elsewhere this week badly enough to kill an entire article about a different franchise.

Third, runtime. A promotional clip can occupy an episode slot and pass every other test. A minute of footage titled with an episode number looks exactly like an episode until you compare its length against how long an episode of that show actually runs. Everything above is full-length.

The catch worth stating plainly

Free windows on publisher channels open and they close. A list typed out once and published goes quietly wrong the first time a rights holder rotates its catalogue, and the reader finds out by clicking into nothing.

That is the difference between this page and the ones above it in search results. The roster below is not a list somebody typed.
