The setup, and why it still works

Hikaru, Umi and Fuu are on a school trip when the floor of Tokyo Tower stops existing. They land in Cephiro, a world held together by the will of one person, and are told they are the legendary Magic Knights who have been summoned to rescue her.

You can see the skeleton of a thousand later shows in that paragraph. What separates this one is that it was written by CLAMP, and CLAMP were not interested in a power fantasy. The three of them are given a quest with a stated goal, they pursue it competently, and the series is extremely deliberate about what completing it costs. The ending is the reason people still argue about this show thirty years later, and it is not the ending the first episode implies.

There is a mecha element as well, arriving late enough that it reads as escalation rather than premise. The Rune Gods are not machines anyone builds. They are earned.

What the free run covers

The free run is the first series, complete. That is a full arc with a real ending rather than a fragment that stops at a cliff.

The story does continue afterwards, in a second series, and that continuation is not part of what plays here. We would rather tell you that up front than have you reach the end of the run and go looking.

Dubbed, not subtitled

Every episode in this run is the English dub. The dialogue is spoken in English, so nothing needs reading, which makes it an unusually easy show to put on for somebody who does not normally watch anime.

That is worth stating because free anime and English dub rarely appear in the same sentence honestly. A lot of pages promising dubs are describing a service you have to subscribe to. This is the studio's own upload, in English, at no cost.

Where it sits in the CLAMP catalogue

If you know CLAMP at all it is probably through Cardcaptor Sakura or xxxHOLiC. Rayearth is earlier and rougher and considerably more willing to hurt its cast, and it is the clearest early example of the thing CLAMP do best: build a bright, generous world and then be completely unsentimental about the rules it runs on.

It is also, quietly, one of the more structurally interesting fantasy series of its decade. The world has an explicit load-bearing mechanism, the plot is about what happens when that mechanism fails, and the resolution follows from the mechanism rather than from anybody winning a fight. That is rarer than it sounds.

A good time to watch it

There is a new Magic Knight Rayearth anime in production, which means the original is about to be a reference point in a lot of conversations.

Watching a remake without the original is a way to have a worse time with both. This one costs nothing and is twenty episodes, so the barrier is close to zero.
