Gleipnir Review, The Mascot Suit Is a Weapon and a Confession

Here's the thesis: Gleipnir is a fight show wearing a psychological drama's clothes, and it's at its best when it admits that. The 2020 series' core image, Shuuichi transforms into a giant hollow mascot suit, and classmate Claire zips herself inside to pilot him, is one of the strangest combat mechanics in recent memory, and the show mines it properly. Two people sharing one body means every battle is also a trust exercise; her ruthlessness steering his power gives the action a two-brain rhythm that most transformation series never attempt.

And the fights deliver. The battle-royale structure, scattered coin-collectors with grotesque bespoke abilities hunting each other, keeps matchups varied, and the choreography stays readable even when the body horror gets gnarly. Pacing across the 13 episodes is aggressive; the show would rather cut to the next confrontation than let a quiet scene finish, which suits its feral energy. Claire is the engine here: an unnerving co-lead whose willingness to do what Shuuichi can't gives every encounter a moral edge that pure spectacle wouldn't earn.

The honest weakness is the plot around the punching. The larger mystery of the coins and the alien wish-granting behind them advances in lurches, dangles threads it clearly can't resolve in one season, and leans on ecchi framing that reads more like a sales mandate than a choice. Come for a battle series with a genuinely unique gimmick and a mean streak; just don't expect the mythology to pay off its setup.
