There's a particular ache in the early episodes of My Dress-Up Darling: a boy alone with his craft, certain that the thing he loves most is the thing that makes him unlovable. Wakana Gojou makes traditional Hina dolls, and he's learned to hide it. Then Marin Kitagawa — loud, luminous, effortlessly popular — catches him at his sewing machine, and instead of the ridicule he's braced for his whole life, she lights up. What the 2022 series understands, across its twelve episodes, is that acceptance is the most romantic thing one person can offer another.
