ODDTAXI Review — The Best Conversations in Anime Happen in a Cab

ODDTAXI's quiet thesis is that a taxi is a confessional on wheels, and if you listen to enough passengers, the whole city eventually tells you its secrets. Odokawa, a blunt, middle-aged walrus of a driver, ferries an ensemble of animal-faced Tokyo strangers — a broke college kid chasing viral fame, an idol, a nurse, men with worse intentions — and every seemingly disposable conversation turns out to be a gear in one interlocking machine. A girl has gone missing. The show never lets you forget it, even when it's ostensibly just two characters talking about nothing.

What moved me most on revisit is how character-first the mystery construction is. The 2021 series doesn't hide clues in objects; it hides them in personalities — in why someone lies, what loneliness makes people buy, how badly everyone here wants to be seen. Odokawa himself is a beautiful creation, a man whose deadpan rudeness is clearly armor over something the show reveals with enormous patience. By the time the threads pull tight, the payoff isn't just clever; it recontextualizes conversations you'd already filed away as charming filler, and it earns its emotion honestly.

One fair warning: the first few of its 13 episodes demand trust. The show reads as low-key vignette comedy before the thriller skeleton becomes visible, and viewers expecting immediate momentum may stall out precisely when they should push on. Push on.
