The setup sounds like a children's show run through a shredder. Takopi, a relentlessly cheerful alien, arrives on Earth with gadgets and a mission to spread happiness, and attaches himself to Shizuka, an isolated fourth grader whose life is far darker than his worldview can process. The sci-fi machinery — the gadgets, the alien logic — functions as a genuine system with rules the story honors, and the collision between Takopi's naive problem-solving framework and problems that cannot be gadget-ed away generates the series' central, wrenching engine. Watching an optimist's model of the world fail against reality, one gentle assumption at a time, is the actual plot.

Be warned: this is a heavy watch dealing with childhood suffering, and the tonal whiplash between cute alien antics and raw domestic misery will be too much for some viewers — that dissonance is intentional, but early on it can read as cruelty for its own sake before the design becomes clear.
