Watch The Rose of Versailles Free: All 40 Episodes

There is a particular kind of anime that everyone agrees is important and almost nobody has actually seen, and The Rose of Versailles has been the reigning example for about forty years.

It is free. All 40 episodes, English subtitled, posted by the rights holder. And for a while it was missing from our own lists, which is a story worth telling because it explains something about how this site works.

What it is

Riyoko Ikeda's manga began in 1972 and the anime followed in 1979. It is set in the French court in the years before the revolution, and its central figure is Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to inherit her father's position as commander of the royal guard.

That premise could have been a costume drama with a gimmick. What Ikeda did with it instead was build one of the most serious treatments of gender, class, and duty that comics have produced, and then let a revolution arrive and take everything apart.

The 1979 adaptation is where a great deal of the visual grammar people think of as shoujo anime was worked out. If you have seen Revolutionary Girl Utena and wondered where its roses and its staircases and its impossible uniforms came from, they came from here, deliberately and explicitly.

Why it was missing from our lists

An earlier AnimeSphere list of complete free series left this one out, and it was not an oversight.

When we checked the run, one video was filed under two different episode numbers. Not one video, in fact, but most of them. It meant that a reader who clicked episode 12 could land on the video for episode 11, and the further into the series they went the worse it got. A show is not watchable if its episode list lies about which episode is which, so it stayed off the list.

Those duplicate entries have since been retired. The run now reads as 40 distinct episodes with no video appearing under more than one number, and the order is exact from beginning to end. That is why it appears here now and did not before.

We are telling you this rather than quietly adding it, because a list that only ever grows and never explains itself is not a list you have any reason to believe.

The two subtitle sets

You may notice the series holds more videos than it has episodes. That is not the old problem coming back.

TMS runs two channels. Anime! on TMS carries the English subtitled set, and TMS Anime Latino carries a Spanish subtitled set of the same episodes. Both are official, both are the same show, and our catalog holds both. The English set is what the episode links below open.

How to watch it

Start at episode 1 and do not skip. The series is deliberately slow to arrange its pieces, and the early court episodes are doing work that pays off much later, when the tone shifts from palace intrigue to something considerably darker.

The commonly repeated advice that it improves around episode 19 is roughly true, and is also the sort of advice that gets people to quit at episode 4. The better framing is that the first third is a different show than the last third, on purpose, and watching the change happen is most of the point.

If you have forty episodes of patience, this is one of the few times the phrase historically important is doing real work rather than covering for something dull.
