This one is for a specific viewer: the person who watches a friendly classroom scene and immediately wonders who's running a con. Classroom of the Elite, a 2017 series of twelve episodes, is set in an elite academy where classes are ranked, privileges are points, and the institution has quietly arranged for its students to prey on one another. If you want warmth, look elsewhere. If you want to watch teenagers discover that every kindness has a price tag, pull up a chair.

What kept me watching wasn't the scheming itself but the character question underneath it. Ayanokouji, the resident cipher, drifts through the bottom-ranked class performing mediocrity while nudging events with unsettling precision — and the show's best tension is emotional, not tactical: what happened to a boy that he treats every relationship as an instrument? His wary alliance with the prickly, isolated Horikita gives the early episodes their pulse, two people using each other and pretending that's all it is. The supporting class is drawn with enough loneliness and bravado to make the point system feel genuinely cruel.

My one real complaint is that the show's guardedness becomes the audience's problem: it withholds its protagonist's interiority so completely that the emotional payoff stays perpetually on layaway.
