Mob Psycho 100 Review — The Gentlest Show About Explosions

There's a counter ticking under this whole series. Every time Mob swallows a feeling — embarrassment, hurt, longing — the number climbs toward 100, and something in you tightens along with it. That's the quiet brilliance of Mob Psycho 100: the spectacle isn't really about psychic battles, it's about what happens to a gentle kid who has been taught that his own emotions are dangerous.

Mob himself is one of the most tenderly written protagonists of 2016. He doesn't want to win fights; he wants to be ordinary, to be liked, to grow in ways his powers can't shortcut. The show surrounds him with people who read him wrong in illuminating ways, and the comedy — much of it gloriously silly — never comes at the expense of his dignity. When the counter finally hits 100, the release lands as feeling first and fireworks second, which is exactly the right order.

One fair warning: the loose, wobbly art style is a genuine hurdle. Faces go simple, lines go crooked, and viewers expecting conventional polish may bounce off the first episode before the aesthetic reveals its expressive purpose. Give it two.
