Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign Review — A Striking Setup in Search of Momentum

The opening stretch of Seraph of the End hits like a gut punch. A virus wipes out everyone over thirteen; the surviving children are herded underground as livestock for vampires; and young Yuichiro decides, with the pure uncomplicated fury only a kid can sustain, that he will kill every last one of them. As cold opens go, the 2015 series has one of the strongest in its class — bleak, propulsive, and personal.

Then it downshifts, and here's where I have to be honest about the pacing. After that ferocious setup, a long stretch of these twelve episodes is spent in training and team-assembly mode, and the show delivers too much of its world through exposition rather than action. The demon-weapon mechanics, the military hierarchy, the vampire politics — it's all interesting on paper, but it arrives in briefing-room dialogue when it should arrive mid-fight. For an action series, it spends a surprising amount of time standing still.

What keeps it watchable is the craft around the edges. The ruined-city backdrops are genuinely beautiful, the squad dynamic warms up nicely once it assembles, and when the blades finally come out in the back stretch, the choreography is clean and easy to follow. Three episodes stream free here, which conveniently covers the strongest material. If the premise grabs you there, temper your expectations for the middle and you'll come out reasonably satisfied.
