The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 Review — A Hero Carrying More Than His Shield

Here's the thing about sequels to underdog stories: once the underdog wins respect, you need a new engine. Season 2 of Shield Hero, arriving in 2022, tries to build one out of the Spirit Tortoise — a colossal creature whose awakening freezes the Wave countdown and forces the kingdom to act. It's a strong hook. A threat so big the usual rules pause? That's the kind of escalation an action series should feast on, and when the show commits to sheer scale, it can still summon real spectacle.

Naofumi remains the draw. Watching a tank-class hero solve problems a damage-dealer can't — positioning, protection, attrition — gives the fights a different texture than standard power-fantasy fare, and his found-family party keeps the quieter beats warm. The fact that he's the only one of the four heroes who steps up for the tortoise campaign says everything the season needs to say about him.

But the honest caveat is a big one: the pacing. Thirteen episodes juggle the tortoise arc and what follows with a choppiness that undercuts momentum — battles resolve abruptly, new characters arrive underdeveloped, and the connective tissue between set pieces feels compressed. Fights that should hit like haymakers land like jabs. If you loved season one's simmering anger, temper expectations; this is a serviceable middle chapter, not a comeback.
